  Our Story

• Originally introduced by their dear friend Chana at the Watering Hole bar during the Portugal vs. USA World Cup match, the couple didn’t speak again until years later, at Howard’s Charter Day celebration. That night another mutual friend, Kamilah, “gently” nudged Anthony in Dawnie’s direction.

  For their first date a few weeks later, Anthony was late; Dawnie was not. The food was mediocre, it was hard to hear, and the conversation was awkward. After brunch they exchanged polite goodbyes, and that might have been the end...except Anthony wanted to go to the art supply store across the street. Dawnie followed him to pick up some crayons for a coloring book she’d recently been gifted, and it was there, seeing Anthony in his natural habitat, that she decided she was “feeling him a little bit.”

  And now here we are.

When looking for the perfect location for our celebration, the Savannah area stood out immediately. The convenience of the region to both of our hometowns made it an easy choice, and we spent a wonderful New Year's together there a few years back, headlined by a once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm and Instagram pics posed next to frozen palmetto trees in the city's scenic squares.

The South Carolina Sea Islands and Savannah are the cornerstone of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and the Lowcountry features many historical landmarks connected to Black life and the advancement of African Americans during the Reconstruction period and afterward. Savannah itself is separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River. Its historic district is filled with cobblestoned squares and parks shaded by oak trees and covered with the trademark Spanish moss that is common to the entire region.

We're excited to share our special day in this very special place with the people who are most special to us — our family and friends.
